There has been a recent upsurge in the development and implementation of corporate and employee fitness programmes. Many companies, both large and small, have seen the value of providing health and fitness promotion programmes for their staff. Some of the major corporations are able to build comprehensive facilities, whilst others must lease space in nearby health or leisure centres.

Regardless of where the programme is housed, the same problem faces every corporate supplier. That is, 'How do we start a health or fitness promotion when no one on staff has the expertise to do this?' The next question becomes, 'Once we have the programmes in place, who administers them?'

The answer to both questions is identical. One possibility is to hire a health or fitness promotion Director on the company payroll. Unfortunately, this cannot always be justified, especially as there is no direct revenue generated.

An alternative solution, and one that is becoming more and more popular with corporations, is to hire a specialist fitness centre consultant. The consultant can be responsible for anything from facility design to programme development to staff training to administration and direction of the actual classes and programmes.

Companies are taking this contracting approach because it allows them to draw on the knowledge and resources of experienced fitness professionals for a limited, but necessary, time period without having to create a new staff position and the cost that this entails.
